What are the Standards of
Learning (SOL) tests?

In response to “No Child Left Behind,” Virginia embraced Standards of Learning (SOL) in math, science, English, history and social studies. Additionally, Grades 5, 8, and 11 have SOL in technology. Each spring, students in grades 3, 5, 8, and high school take SOL tests to determine their knowledge base. High School students must pass each subject SOL to graduate. Since SOL are state requirements, each school district must apply the same standards, however they have some flexibility in setting test dates. Click here to learn more about VA SOL: www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Parents/index.html

What is the difference between block scheduling and traditional scheduling?

Block Scheduling — Block scheduling is a method of scheduling that lengthens the duration of a class period. Two types of block scheduling are common in Virginia:

  • 4X4 Block - Students take four 90-minute classes each day for one semester. An entire course is completed during one semester instead of a full year. Some courses may require sequential semesters.
  • A/B or Rotating Block - In a typical rotating block schedule, students take six, seven, or eight classes for an entire year. Classes in each subject are 90 minutes and meet on alternate days. Some variations include a 45-minute class that meets every day.

Traditional Scheduling — Traditional scheduling is a method of scheduling six to eight class periods daily. Generally, each class period is less than one hour. The same subject is presented the same period daily with elective classes being alternated within the week or the semester.

What type of scheduling does my child’s school use?

Hampton Roads Schools offer all types of scheduling. For more specifics, contact the school district for further information on a particular school and its scheduling.

What are the course
requirements for graduation?

Are there new student welcoming programs?

All schools offer some type of new student welcoming program. Contact the school guidance office to request a new student welcome package. New student programs and school orientation varies based on grade level, school size, number of new students and other related factors.
